The words pentjak silat roughly translate as "artful combat". Pentjak, or the "art", refers to the dance-like movements that are the trademark of the style, while silat refers to its combative application. Doing pentjak without silat is meaningless in application; silat without pentjak is fighting without strategy or tactics. These two elements combined have created a martial art like no other.

Buka Jalan Pentjak Silat is the system of silat developed by Sifu Cass Magda of the Magda Institute of Martial Arts in Reseda, CA. It draws from more than 20 styles of silat he has studied and incorporates sophisticated hand movements, footwork, joint manipulations, throws, and groundwork.
